The Story

June 6th 1944 marked the beginning of Operation Overlord and the Battle of Normandy, with a colossal airborne offensive providing air support for the naval invasion force. Black and white recognition stripes hastily painted on allied aircraft minimised the risk of ‘friendly fire’ incidents.

  • D-Day markings as worn by rare Typhoon survivor MN235 from 1972 to 2013 on static display at the RAF Museum
