June 6th 1944 marked the beginning of Operation Overlord and the Battle of Normandy, with a colossal airborne offensive providing air support for the naval invasion force. Black and white recognition stripes hastily painted on allied aircraft minimised the risk of ‘friendly fire’ incidents.
